The growing ties between <\/span>Jamaica<\/b> and <\/span>Sierra Leone<\/b> signal a recognition by both countries of the need to widen their tourist catchment areas beyond their traditional regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the perfect time to spread larger nets as both regions \u2013 the <\/span>Caribbean<\/b> and <\/span>Africa<\/b> \u2013 reset and reconfigure their tourism sectors following the massive COVID-related disruptions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sierra Leone has significant historical ties with <\/span>North America<\/b> and has a populace with strong family connections in the <\/span>United States<\/b> who also are aware of the attractions of Jamaica and the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the strong historical and cultural association between Jamaica and Sierra Leone, it is strategic to collaborate and strengthen our tourism cooperation,\u201d said <\/span>Edmund Bartlett<\/b>, Jamaica\u2019s Minister of Tourism. \u201cBoth countries have a lot to offer in tourism and we can capitalize on this to build out <\/span>new experiences<\/b> for our visitors,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recent discussions between Minister Bartlett and <\/span>Dr. Memunatu Pratt<\/b>, Sierra Leone\u2019s Minister of Tourism, centered around <\/span>air connectivity<\/b>; <\/span>training and development<\/b>; <\/span>marketing and promotional activities<\/b>; <\/span>cultural exchange<\/b>; <\/span>tourism diversification<\/b>; and <\/span>growth and resilience<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from tourism, the <\/span>South-South exchange<\/b> of technology and innovation should stand both regions in good stead as the dynamism of African innovation is starting to command attention in the richer northern countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamaica\u2019s experience with <\/span>resilience<\/b>, shared with the rest of the Caribbean, will benefit the fledgling economies of Africa as they move towards complete <\/span>economic independence<\/b>. Sustainable growth in the tourism and other sectors relies heavily on resilience and the space it provides for <\/span>innovation<\/b> and <\/span>community-centered development<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe pandemic has been the most tangible example of tourism vulnerability to disruptions and so a major area of focus will be resilience and resilience building to ensure the <\/span>future proofing of the industry<\/b>. It is critical that we build capacity in tourism to withstand and recover stronger for the next disruption we may encounter,\u201d Minister Bartlett commented.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both ministers are expected to attend the upcoming <\/span>Global Tourism Resilience Conference<\/b> in Kingston at the University of the West Indies\u2019 Regional Headquarters, February 15-17, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

Further discussions to finalize a <\/span>Memorandum of Understanding <\/b>between the two countries will be held on the margins of the tourism meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n
