BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (June 19, 2026) — The Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) has appointed Kelly-Ann Payne as chairman for the 2026-2028 term, placing one of the island’s experienced hospitality and human resources professionals at the helm of the influential private-sector tourism organization. She replaced hotelier Javon Griffith who served impressively over the past two years.
Payne, multi-property director of human resources for the Barbados Marriott Collection of hotels, brings more than two decades of experience in Caribbean tourism, hospitality operations and workforce development. A seasoned BHTA member, she has served on the association’s board of directors, contributing to initiatives focused on industry advocacy, sustainability and talent development.
Speaking at the BHTA’s recent Annual General Meeting, Payne emphasized tourism’s central role in Barbados’ economy, noting that the island welcomed a record 729,000 long-stay visitors in 2025. She highlighted the sector’s contribution to national development, citing its impact on employment, business growth and economic activity across the island.
“Tourism is our business. It is not just something we participate in. It is the backbone of our economy and our livelihoods,” Payne told members.
She also challenged industry stakeholders to continue shaping the future of the sector through innovation, investment and collaboration, describing BHTA members as “the innovators, the investors and the ambassadors of the Barbadian experience.”
Prior to her current role, Payne spent more than a decade as general manager of the Courtyard by Marriott Bridgetown, where she oversaw hotel operations, guest experience and owner relations. She began her Marriott career in 2008 at the St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort, advancing from human resources manager to director of human resources.
Payne holds an MBA from the University of Leicester, a Bachelor of Science degree in hotel management from The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and a Master’s Diploma in Human Resource Management from BIMAP. A recipient of the Marriott Success for Youth Community Service Award, she is also recognized for her commitment to mentorship and professional development, including service as a mentor with the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Education Foundation.
As chair, Payne is expected to help guide BHTA’s advocacy efforts and strengthen collaboration between the tourism industry, government and other stakeholders as Barbados seeks to build on record visitor arrivals and maintain its competitiveness in the regional tourism marketplace.
